1 - Group Similar Items

Organize your refrigerator shelves by grouping taller items together and shorter items together. For example, store all bottles, jars and other tall containers together on the top shelves where there is more vertical room. Then place shorter items like small condiment jars, yogurt cups and snack packs on the lower and middle shelves. Grouping similar items makes them all easy to see and access.

2 - Use Door Storage for High-Traffic Items

The door shelves and bins should be used for items you access frequently, like beverages, condiments, butter, cream cheese, sauces and other grab-and-go items. Storing these most-used items on the door allows for quick access and avoids having to move other items around to reach them.

3 - Invest in Storage Bins and Organizers

Clear plastic bins are great for categorizing similar items. For example, have a bin just for cheese storage, another just for yogurt, one for fruits and veggies, etc. The see-through bins make it easy to identify contents. Labeled bins help avoid forgetting what's inside. They keep items neatly contained while maximizing vertical storage.

4 - Store Leftovers Efficiently

Get the most fridge real estate out of leftovers by transferring them from their original containers into reusable storage containers and bags. Use narrow containers to easily slide into small open spaces. Always label containers clearly with dates and contents to prevent mystery leftovers.

5 - Optimize Crisper Drawers with Humidity Controls

Make good use of humidity-controlled crisper drawers by storing fruits and veggies that need higher humidity in one drawer, and items that need lower humidity in the other. Properly storing fresh produce helps extend its shelf life and reduces spoilage or mushiness.

6 - Freeze or Preserve Excess Food

Preserve fresh produce and leftovers to avoid overcrowding the refrigerator. Transfer excess fresh fruits/veggies and cooked foods into freezer bags or containers for longer term storage. Canning and pickling are other ways to preserve foods without refrigeration.

7 - Toss Expired Foods Weekly

Get in the habit of clearing out expired, spoiled and stale items on a weekly basis. Check dates on dairy, eggs, leftovers, prepared meals and packaged foods. Toss or donate anything you won't realistically eat. An uncluttered fridge helps you shop smarter and reduce waste.
